Before a Typhoon

Know the Risks in Your Area

Check Outside Your Home

  • Roof
  • Rain gutters and storm shutters
  • Exterior walls
  • Balcony (Bring inside anything that could be blown away, like potted plants or laundry poles)
  • Window glass
  • Concrete block walls

Inside the Home

  • Prepare flashlights and a battery-powered radio in case of power outage.
  • Secure drinking water in case the water supply is cut off.
  • Prepare emergency items (valuables, essential supplies) in case you need to evacuate.
  • Pay close attention to weather reports about typhoons, rain, and wind.
  • Stay indoors. If you’re already outside, return home quickly.
  • If there’s a risk of flooding, move valuables and belongings to higher places.
  • Make sure elderly people, babies, children, the sick, or people with disabilities are in a safe room.
  • Discuss evacuation locations and communication methods with your family in case you get separated.

Hamamatsu City Disaster Multilingual Support Center

In accordance with the Hamamatsu City Regional Disaster Prevention Plan, the Hamamatsu City Disaster Multilingual Support Center was established to assist foreign residents during disasters. An agreement between the City of Hamamatsu and the Hamamatsu International Exchange Foundation was signed on March 5, 2015, to set up and operate the center.
