Taxes

If you earn income in Japan, or have been living in Japan for over 1 year, you have a duty to pay taxes regardless of nationality. Taxes in Japan can be generally categorized into two main categories; income tax (Taxes on income paid to the government) and resident tax (Taxes charged if you live here for more than one year paid to the prefecture and municipality).

In addition to these two categories, there is also:

  • Consumption tax: a tax on purchases made in Japan.
  • Vehicle tax/light vehicle tax: Taxes paid by people who own cars.
  • Property tax: Taxes paid by people who own houses and land.
